Follow-up on the Podcasting App Comparison
Friday, July 15, 2011 at 3:21PM A short while ago I wrote this article comparing the different podcasting apps on the iPhone and I thought I would do a brief update.
Since then the most actively updated has been Instacast, with some good changes made that address some of the points that I raised in my article, such as by adding a download waiting list, auto clear and continuous playback. It really is a solid app with a clean interface and if it had some more granular playlist control and the ability to control playback via gestures, I would seriously have to consider whether it wouldn't be able to replace Downcast.
I'm not aware of any changes or updates being made either to Pocket Casts or Podcaster and so have had no reason to go back and look at these two applications again. I still have them on my phone though so in the event that they are updated I can review the changes.
I still use Downcast, I still find the interface a little clunky at times but the gesture support is great. I also noticed a couple of other little things that I didn't pick up on in my review, such as when listening to a podcast and a download is available, the podcasts button changes to a downloads button and that the sleep timer has much more granularity to it than the standard 15, 30, 45 and 60 minutes that are available in most of the other programs.
I'm still waiting for the perfect app or for one of these apps to make the changes that would make it perfect for me, until then I'll be keeping an eye on the updates as they come out.
