Surfing Efficiently (?)
Friday, March 4, 2011 at 10:56AM I am constantly waging aware against an adversary who never backs a way, never stops, never tires and is absolutely relentless even though he is outnumbered, he's called Time. Even though he is to all intents and purposes invincible in the long run, there are ways to snatch small victories from him in the meantime.
I came across one of these just the other day, in what can only be described as a bright light shining into a dark and cobwebby space as I finally grokked what a few million of you already have. RSS Readers.
The problem I was having is that I am trying to do my day job, which pays the bills and write, which one day I hope will take me somewhere while in the meantime staying on top of new trends, research and if I am honest reading stuff I'm interested in on the Internet. All of this was taking an age while going through the bookmarks and visiting each site individually and so I was struggling to fit it in around the other things I needed to do.
Then I had the epiphany about the RSS reader(s), I had been aware of them before but there never seemed to be much point to them (at least to me), so I always gave up on using them but I realised that the big difference then was that I had more time, lots of it. Now though, with time being precious and scarce, I finally understand the point and appreciate the time it saves me.
I'm currently using the ad-supported version of NetNewsWire, I like its interface and its integration with Google Reader (downloaded from the developers site, the one from the app store doesn't integrate with reader yet).
So kind of obvious I admit but I thought that I can't be the only one who didn't understand this and hope this helps someone else.
